OT: Print to File

I'd like to create files of some spreadsheets and then take them to a 
copy place to get laser copies.
I've never used "Print to File".  What format is the output file ?  What 
program can print it?
I tried drag-n-drop to the printer but get an error ("No program 
assocciated ..").
