The windows automatic update thingie told me it wanted to intall SP2 so
I said go for it. By all reports, MS has done a major overhaul to
tighten security.
It took a couple of days to download; their server must be busy. Once it
finally downloaded, I said go ahead and install it. It churned away for
about an hour and finally told me to reboot. I did it and, whew, no
BSOD. I got a screen saying it couldn't verify that Norton Antivirus was
working OK. I clicked the box that said don't sweat it, I'll handle it,
and rebooted again. No warnings this time. I forced an update of Norton
and it updated a bunch of things. Apparently Symantec is aware of SP2
and is ready for it. I did another reboot and started browsing. I had
heard SP2 included a popup blocker so I looked in Internet Options -
Security and, sure enough there was a popup blocker enabled by default.
I browsed to a site I knew had a bunch of annoying popups and it worked
like a charm. Other than that, I haven't noticed any big changes in the
way things work.
So, so far, it's a big thumbs up for me. We'll see how long it takes the
crackers to find the holes in the security. :-)
