For me the choice was easy. A Readeon 9800.
Not for the 3d as I rarely play a game.
But because the 9800 is the only card that has enough bandwidth (390Mhz) to feed
my 21" CRT
I seem to have very sensitive eyes and see screen flicker very easily.
85Hz+ should be enough for most. But I prefer 120Hz.

So all depends on what resolution, refreshrate  and colordepth you use.

Xresolution * Yresolution * refreshrate * colordepth(in bytes)

Take that figure and see if the DACs can handle that.
For ATi 9800 is the only one that can drive big screens at high res.
