I'm not sure about earlier versions of Windows.
Hit the Print Screen key to copy the screen to the clipboard
Open MS Photo Editor
Edit: Paste as new image
Selection tool: drag a rectangle around the part you want to keep
Image: Crop
Save as a .gif or .jpg
It took longer to type that than to do it. :-)
