I've never had to do this. The correct symbol data always gets used
for any of my ASCII data files, whether from Pinnacle or not.

If the file name corresponds to a ticker symbol, then the correct
symbol data will be used. I've never had a problem with it.
For example, the ASCII Pinnacle files LC_REV.csv and LC_RAD.csv
will both cause TS to assume the data is for Live Cattle. If
you name your data file something like "COMEX_gold.txt" or
"AppleComputers.csv" then you'll have to define your own symbol
data.
TradeStation wants the file names to start with ticker symbols. It
seems that the ticker, followed by any non-alphanumeric character
(a dot or underscore or nothing) is sufficient to make TS use the
correct symbol data.
