Beware of Norton Updates . . .

well, the culprit was not a virus

it was not Norton (Norton antivirus, to its credit) has stopped cold an
average of 35 each day, of the current versions of various viri beginning
tuesday of this week.

the CPU was an overheated (then fried) AMD 1700 CPU which did not have a
very good fan on it... fan was spinning very slowly & the temp of the cpu
was very high... which ruined the cpu. got a new cpu with an aftermarket
strong fan with a couple of box fans to boot, & it's running cool as a
cucumber. Unfortunately i had Rennaisance Computer in Dallas make the
computer, & they locked their doors as spontaneously as my computer was
rebooting (actually their office was vacant & the sign on he door said the
landlord locked them out... looked like they skipped!... it was a franchise
store & i'm sure the mother company would claim no warranty liability.
their websiste forwards to Computer Resource, a used equipment outfit in
Carrollton, TX

thanx to everyone for the clues of things to watch for... since it was
rebooting spontaneously there at the end, it really seemed like the virus,
but none was found

thanx, preston
