very easy to do this ...

1. assuming win2000, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative
Tools

2. Double Click "Services".

3. Scroll down to "Messenger" and double click.

4. "Stop" service.

5. Set Startup type to "Disabled"

Unless you're part of a network, you'll be ok. The Messenger service is used
by the administrator to send messages to network users. This services is
misused by the "pop-up messages" people.
