If any of your friends inadvertantly install spyware on their computer
while browsing, that address has the potential to be broadcast to a
spammer who wrote the spyware, or to the world.

The evidence doesn't support that conclusion. You see, I haven't
received a single one of those blank emails in my mailbox. They are
all caught and bounced by my server-side spam filter. And bouncing
the mail back with an "unknown user" mailserver error has absolutely
no effect. It keeps coming. And this isn't a case where I set up
my spam filter to bounce specifically that, so there's no way the
message got delivered even once. My filter bounced it all on its
own, based on the rules already there.

Blacklisting in multiple DNSBLs. I've seen it happen before, as a
result of a server in Japan sending out hundreds of test messages
over a period of weeks.
