Thanks to Jerry, Jimmy, Mike, Gerald and Doug for sending help.
The blue screen and message in item 1. is new.
1.Holding power button for 5 seconds while Win2000 running brings a blue
screen with message
"Driver-Power-State-Failure". Then power shuts down but doesn't fix for
next time.
2.Holding the button for 5 after Win2000 shuts down kills the power but
doesn't fix for next time.
3.Control Panel/Power shows Desk/Home-Office scheme, never turn off
monitor, never turn off hd.
I think that refers to sleep mode only, not shut down.
4.The PC was originally Win98 Plus. Six months ago put in a new, Intel
mobo. Two weeks ago
an IBM 40gig hd and Win2000 Pro o/s. All was well until yesterday.
Thanks again for your help. Please send other suggestions if something
comes to mind.

LG> Hello Everyone,
LG> I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I found nothing in the Windows
LG> Knowledge Base or on the various troubleshooting sites.
LG> Installed new hd and Win2000 Pro couple weeks ago. Everything had been
LG> working fine until yesterday.
LG> 1.7/13/03 I installed a Win Security Update, a Recommended Update for
LG> Win2000, and a MS .NET Framework update.
LG> 2.Also installed Direct CD then uninstalled it via Add/Remove and deleted
LG> the Direct folder manually.
LG> 3.I've had EZ CD Creator installed since day 1 and it works fine.
LG> 4.Also installed TS2000i EOD and it seems to work fine (TS, GS, Power Ed.).
LG> Now when I click Start/Shut Down/Shut Down, Win2000 shuts down OK but the
LG> box won't power down. The fans keep spinning, the power light stays on,
LG> the monitor goes dark with a cursor flashing in the upper left corner.
