Robert,
do you have an European version of the OS?
If so, taking a look to the OR Knowledge Base may help.
Search for Document ID 662
or ask a question similar to:
"Unable to install a version 2000i product using a European version of
Windows..."
In short, it's a matter of creating the folder
c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO
then search for the file msado15.dll
and copy it to that new folder.
Then start installing again from scratch.
Please note that on your system "Program File" may have another name,
depending upon the localized version of the OS (in Italian it is
"Programmi").
