Yes, but there is more to it than cutting one wire.
If you are only using three wires make sure you have
setup the connectors properly with the loop backs.
Find a setup for a "Null Modem" to see wiring configeration.
Remember: TX -> RX
RX -> TX

If I set up a direct link between computers using RS232 can I cut one of the
wires in the cable (there are usually 3 in the simplest cable,
send/receive/ground) to ensure one way communication only?
