You can do it through a "trustee" plus a brokerage firm that allows it.
Trustees and brokerage firms can set limits on what percentage of your total
retirement funds you can trade and can require a certain percent of your
trading funds held back in case of margin calls; there is great variation in
these restrictions. Interactive Brokers recently announced that they will
allow futures (and options) trading in IRA accounts and will announce
details in early May.
