Chris,
Win2000 has a nice feature that takes you back to the last configuration
that was working properly. I've used it twice recently when some strange
things happened, and shut down was taking too long. Reboot and hit F8 when
it starts up again and you should see some choices, one of which is the
above mentioned. It seemed to work well for me.
