I have not REALLY solved it either, but I use Ghost for backup/images.
Makes a clone of a drive, and even with complete hardware failure on
the original drive, the hardware clone will work immediately with no
extra software installs as would be necessary if files are just
copied.
Ghost also makes image files, and these can be made over a local net
as well as on the same computer. If you have a 'TS' partition, for
example, this can be imaged on another computer hard drive. If you
have an large, extra drive on the local net, it can be used to backup
several partitions from different computers. If this drive is
removable, it can be placed in a safe location for extra insurance.
Not REALLY solved (it still takes time to image a big drive), but not
a bad solution. Regarding the time, if you are running TS with nothing
else, on a dedicated machine, the disk space is minimal, and Ghost can
do a clone in just a few minutes. Another reason to use a dedicated
computer for TS.
