Hard drive keeps running, computer freezes : Help ?

Hi, 

My system
Win 2000 sp2
ADSL
Ram 384
Intel 660 MHZ
HD 20 Gig, 6 free
I defrag 3 times a week

I have a light on my PC named "HDD" or my guess Hard drive busy light. My hard
drive churns over for, it seams ages, like a 2 minutes, and while it does that
my computer wont do anything, mouse cursor wont move, nothing. So not good for
trading. I have a an application that removes unwanted files (ie tmp, bak, etc
and registry entries that have no key ( ie EasyCleaner from Downloads.com).

So it thought that I have a tidy hard drive, but it continues.
Any ideas
