Assuming, of course, that he's scanning photographs.
If you don't have gif, I'd suggest trying png, -if- you're
scanning things like charts, or other "graphic design" type
images - with high contrast, and strongly defined edges (eg,
text, black on white, would appear to 'blur' slightly if you
used jpg).
Other than that subset, Dave is right on the money, jpg is
definitely the way to go (and he would know) :)
