Jim--
Here's some info of Win200, Outlook Express, and AT&T's dialer. Some one
else will have to fill in details on Win 98, whch I've never used.
Outlook Express, if you are using it, will tell you where mail is stored.
Tools->options->maintenance->store folder. In setups I have worked on,
(sorry, no experience with Win 98) this turns out to be c:\documents and
settings\[user name]\local settings\application data\identities\[long random
string].
[User name] should of course be the user you are logged in as when you check
email, and [long random string] will be just that--you can read it from what
Outlook Express tells you about the location of your store folder, or just
look in the appropriate directory for it--it will likely be the only thing
there. That long random string is itself a directory, and make sure to copy
over everything in it.
Doing so will obliterate anything you have in the way of email on the new
machine, so it you have any there, you will want to create a folder with a
different name and export it, then import it after you to the file
replacement. That import should be additive, rather than a replacement.
For addresses, I can tell you where they are stored in Win 2000:
c:\documents and settings\[user name]\application data\microsoft\\address
book. There are two files to copy over. Again, this replaces any addresses
you have on your new machine--if you have any there, you would want to
export them first and import them after the file copy.
Favorites are stored in c:\documents and settings\[user name]\favorites.
In case you are using AT&T for your ISP, there is a poorly-documented back
way to configure dial settings when setting up a new machine (dialer
settings only, though--not addresses, favorites, messages, etc.) Search for
a file called "account.txt" on your old machine. If you can find it, you
are in luck. Reportedly, some versions of the AT&T software don't have it,
but I have always found it. If you read it, it should obviously contain
dialer settings.
When setting up the account on the new machine, when the menu asks you if
you want to set up a new account of sign on and download your old settings,
hit "alt I" and a new choice will pop up, allowing you to specify the
location of the account.txt file. It will take the file and set your dialer
accordingly. If "alt I" doesn't work, try it at the next choice point in
the process, or use the "back" button and try it at the one before. This
works very well--I've done it several times.
Good luck! Hope some of this helps.
