This reminds me of a joke from Fiddler on the Roof:
A man gives a beggar a handout.
"One kopek!" exclaims the indignant begger. "Last week, you gave me two
kopeks!"
"I had a bad week," replies the donor.
"So, if you had a bad week, why should I suffer?" shouts the outraged
beggar.
