correlation indicator

Ok, I'm probably missing something obvious but
I would appreciate clarification.
My understanding of the correlation indicator is
that 1 means 100% positive correlation.  Why, when I
use the symbols for es (e-mini)  and sp (s&p 500)
with the correlation indicator do I get a line that wanders back and
forth above and below zero, shouldn't it be one ?
