Done it many times.  It doesn't fix problems but if you are going to mess with your data you need to back it up like this first.  With 9 gigs of data I would be an old man before export finished.

It is my experience (TS2000) however that you can not restore your data that
way.
Only with an import can you do that, which leaves you with a copy of your
data that is not very usefull.
A volume copy with Ghost or similar software is the only effective solution.
