This is a privacy issue, not a security issue. The two are rather
different and require different approaches for protection. MANY free
programs now have (well hidden) spyware to track what you do in
detail. Your profile is then sold to advertisers, or anyone willing to
spend the $$. This is the "price" of much "free" software. Most users
are not aware of this spying, and AV software does NOTHING to protect

Most programs will not work if the spyware is disabled. Be careful,
too. Some software does NOT disable the spyware even if you PAY for
the program!! Check out the alt.privacy.spyware newsgroup for the
latest details - it's an escalating battle between spyware producers
and the anti-spyware toolmakers. :-)
