I have gone through this a couple of times, and it's a pain. Here's what I
did:
I first executed a DIR /s on the windows directory of the working drive
(before the replacement) and redirected the output to a file to save it. I
then executed a DIR /s /a:h (hidden files) and again saved the output to a
file. Finally, a DIR /s /a:s > sys.lst saved a list of system files.
Then I performed essentially the same operations on my backed-up files and
compared the results with the above. If I recall correctly, the files which
were missing were several from the \wind\system32\config directory. (Oh, I
forgot to mention that my boot & system files were all on a FAT16
partition.)
Then I booted to DOS and saved the missing system files to my backup copies,
and an augmented restore now worked fine.
Win2000 Pro backup appears to have a facility for backing up the registry.
This may be a way to capture a copy of these critical files from an NTFS
partition.
