On every new computer, I install 2 copies of the O/S.
One on the C: drive and one on D:
When I want to back up the C drive, I boot from the O/S
on the D drive, and vice versa. This set-up is also
good for rebooting from a good O/S when files in the other
gets corrupted. From the good O/S, you can run CHKDSK and
perform other repairs.
