Sounds like my definition of a mission critical machine. You know the
stability of W2K (I assume). XP is brand new. Does XP have any features
that you want (need) that W2K does not? No doubt you've heard about the
exploits that have been hammered against the previous versions of Windows.
No telling what is brewing on the keyboards of hackers around the world for
XP. Reread your own requirements: "stability, performance, and
compatibility". You might install XP and never have a single problem,
but...
Occam's Razor makes this a pretty simple decision for me.

fwiw, I'm not installing XP on any of my boxes until atleast the first
service pack and even then I'm going to resist as long as I can because of
the registration thingy. After 14 years making a living programming writing
software for Microsoft operating systems, I'm seriously considering
alternatives, atleast for personal development. OS-Ex is a serious
operating system. And Linux gets the job done albeit with more work and
fewer bells and whistles. (If you're a Linux fanatic and this last
statement is generating a reply to correct my ignorance, don't bother. I
work with Linux users every day and I know what they deal with.)
Microsoft's growth has hit the law of large numbers and they've decided to
put the screws to their users.

Subject: Windows 2000 vs Windows XP
I'm about to buy a new Pentium 4 machine for two main uses:
- trading/charting with TS4
- internet online order entry (& general web browsing)
...using a dual monitor Matrox G550 video card.
I don't care about the privacy/registration issue of Windows XP that has
many in a furor. I just care about stability, performance and
compatibility. What operating system would people in the know recommend I
use for this machine?
Thanks in advance,
Simon.
