If, by this statement, you mean that history is the history of ideas, and that only ideas have lasting power, then I agree.
Some on the list seem confused by my overall position on the present tragedy. So let me rephrase my position this way: fighting symptoms of a disease, while necessary, will not cure the disease.
Certainly, we must fight the symptoms of terrorism using diplomatic efforts, airport security efforts, military efforts, etc.
But we must also cure the disease, by going to the root cause of all terrorism, and that "root cause", the source of the disease, is "mysticism" - the creation of unreal "higher powers" that allow man's free life to become a value secondary to some other, "higher", value.
I am concerned that by fighting symptoms only, we will not ultimately win. All of the security measures and intelligence gathering and memorial services and red, white, and blue ribbons in the world will not stop the man who values something more than man's free life from killing.
So how do we go onto the battleground of ideas? Well, we begin by clearly stating our position:
"There is no value higher than man's free life. It is wrong for man to sacrifice his life to anything, to submit himself to any mystical "higher power". (The word "Islam", in Arabic, means "submission to God".) For such submission requires a renunciation of our own reason and substitution for it of the whims of some "other". Renunciation of one's reason is renunciation of the faculty that keeps a man alive. Did you ever wonder why all mystics look forward to their own death? Now you know why - they have renounced reason, and thereby renounced their capacity to live. Understand that, and you understand what we're really up against."
Speaking such words would have no effect you say? Baloney. They are the very ideas upon which the greatest country that has ever existed was founded. And they are the ideas that drive her policy today, whether her leaders speak them or not.
Very truly yours,
The Omega Man
