Yet another story of the EL ...

The time was 198x, where the first systemwriter
was born. During that period, the easiest and
most common vertical mkt compiler is pascal.
the floating point calculation at that time was 
not IEEE single precision, it was REAL. It is 
a number format that is less accurate than single.

The virtual machine was written and then
keep enhancing upto now in the 200x. I don't think
you can just "change" the precision over to
a higher standard. As all the previously written
code that drive the calculation will have to be
rewritten ...

These products are commonly known as legacy products.

Most high end vertical market company (like SGI) 
will create a next generation tool based on the
previous concepts, but completely new routines to
take advantage of the new platforms (like 
AliasWavefront's Maya).

That requries doubling the staff, programemrs, and
resource to do so.
