it's because they become mime encoded - that is, if it looked kind of ordered
(eg, a little header at the top, and a little header at the bottom).

You can get apps to decode this 'base 64 encoding' into a regular file.. 
failing
that you could always mail it to me, I'll decode it and mail it back.. I wrote
an app myself (couldn't find one simple enough).

it's pretty straight forward stuff.. it just translates a binary file into 
a text file, without
screwing it up. that way it can be mailed to anyone with any email package, no
matter what O/S they're on, or how their mailer deals with attachments.
