I got a used Dell.  Only needed tech support once and they were 
great.

Kind of like my theory on used cars - let someone else take the 
depreciation.

Horsepower out there is so great now, that being a few megahertz 
behind the new systems doesn't matter.  It'll be a long time before I 
get software for my laptop that'll require the processing power in 
today's new laptops.  Keep in mind, I use mine as a backup and for 
access while on the road.  For the power crunching stuff I've got a 
couple of desktops.

Also, if you go with a big name like Dell, you can be pretty sure 
that drivers, manuals, firmware upgrades will continue to be 
available on the web.  With a second or third tier company, this 
liklihood isn't as great.
