The divisor changes frequently to reflect the stock splits, mergers, etc., in the Dow components.
I once set up a system to calculate the DJIA every minute from the 30 stocks as data1, data2, ... data30 and found that my value was the same as the broadcasted ticks and less than 10 seconds faster.
