I don't recall the year, but my first computer (home computer that is - I
started work in the computer field in 1958) was an Ithaca Intersystems.  The
front panel consisted of an array of lights and a bank of paddle switches
and the case was heavy cast aluminum - a Mack truck could have driven over
it without it sustaining any damage!
