The really BIG advantage of a tape backup system where one rotates multiple
tapes is convenient off-site storage and disaster recovery. Yes, it's highly
unlikely that your home/office will be somehow destroyed or your primary PC
stolen (otherwise those insurance companies wouldn't be making all that
money) but this IS about recovering from a worst case scenario. I have years
of data and research and I don't leave the house even if it's just up to the
7-Eleven for a quart of milk without my latest tape backup in my pocket. But
then I've always been risk adverse....

Don't do what I did and rely on one backup tape, be sure to rotate with at
least two if you go with tape. My drive ate up the tape during a critical
restore one year, and I lost all my data. Now I backup with Powerquest
DriveImage to a second hard drive, and burn CDs as well.
