Just my two cents,
1. tape drive is more time/cost effective if you
are using it for network backup. say, 3 or more
computers need to be backed up. plus tapes
are more portable for moving to a remote safe
location from the operation site.
2. tape drives have many different types,
if all you need is something in the 50G range,
then tape drives of DDS4 spec can do the job
and cost less than the other high end ones.
3. tapes do wear out, so are hard drives.
we used to backup by mirroring the exact
content of some online hd everyniight.
turn out after 2 yrs, the backup drive
died for no reason ... maybe overused?!
4. now we use hd for eod daily backup, with
tapes every week. the combination seems
stable and useful so far.
