If you really want to know about exponential smoothing
(it has a lot more application than just the "moving average"
thing) then try to find:

Smoothing, Forecasting and Prediction of Discrete Time Series
by: Robert Goodell Brown

The one I have was published by Prentice-Hall in 1963 and had
a Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 63-13271.

Professor Brown has published other works in this area also.

longer to respond to reversals. As the cycles speed up, SMA will lag
further behind EMA. However, on straight trends (no cycles), the lags
are the same.
