The new Ultra ATA100 drives are quite a bit cheaper and faster than
SCSI now. Below is listed the NBench read test results for four
different combinations I recently tested:
A SCSI machine with 10000 RPM drives about one year old: 16 MB/sec
Recent SCSI machine with 7200 RPM drives: 23 MB/sec
Fast machine with Ultra ATA100 7200 RPM drive 28 MB/sec
Fast machine with Ultra ATA100 7200 RPM 2-drive RAID array 55 MB/sec
The RAID array uses the Promise FastTrack66 controller with two
drives in a striped array to effectively double the transfer rate.
Of course, if you need external drives, you may still want SCSI.
Latest summary of benchmarks attached below. The TradeStation
optimization speeds are also listed for various combinations of
computers and TradeStation versions.

The time per test was as follows (in seconds). (The total time for an
optimization run would be these numbers multiplied be the number of
tests performed in the run.)
