Adjustments to the index occur frequently throughout the year. If that's of
interest to you, you should check out, at the end of each trading day:
http://www.spglobal.com/ssindexmain500indchange.html
Changes are always made after the close of trading on the dates indicated.
This page also has a link to Name and Ticker changes at the left hand side,
and a news link at the top. The news link frequently gives advance warning
of pending changes.
A similar page for the Nasdaq 100 is at:

Follow the links there to see changes (which occur much less frequently,
although there's usually a big one in December). Note that the Nasdaq 100
changes occur prior to the opening of the date indicated (as opposed to the
S&P).
