Thanks to all who helped me with this in the last week on this topic. I
think I have a nice, cheap, easy solution and though I would share for the
benefit of the group.
The problem is setting up a backup dial-up connection to take effect if DSL
goes down while you are away/asleep/etc. Here is what I have concluded...
1. Run DSL through Linksys DSL/Cable Router as network connection to 2
computers.
2. On esignal computer, run Netoscope ( about $30 at basta.com). This will
continuously (1 min minimum increment) ping a web site of your choice. I
chose tick.usno.navy.mil (port setting = 37 time) as I figured it would
always be up.
3. If the ping test fails, Netoscope can be programmed to run a command
line. Have it run rasdial.exe with the appropriate settings for your dialup
connection. (rasdial yourconnection accountname password) This will
automatically dial your backup if the dsl goes down. Once the dialup is
connected, Netoscope wil then use it to ping the navy.
4. As an additional fallback, I set Netoscope to sound an alert if after 5
min it still has not made a connection.
I have tested this by pulling the network cable to end the dsl connect. It
works perfectly. DUN connects, Esignal locks on to new connect. ;-)
Hope this is helpful.
