I'd agree, but I'd add:

a) I look to enter "breakouts" that are under the radar screen by using very 
short term charts in combination with longer term patterns.

b) I try to limit the number of trades (and "excessive commish") by using
restrictive filters.

I like using breakouts as a filter for trend, but my guess is what I term
a breakout is not what is commonly accepted as one. Anyway you
cut it there is no free lunch: "breakouts" will cost you, but they might
filter out bad trades.
