Hi Tim,
I don't know the particulars of your situation with the person who
blacklisted you. However, in general, I think you have nothing to apologize
for. Answering an e-mail from a list member, or not answering an e-mail
from a list member, is perfectly acceptable behavior for members of a
mailing list.
If the person who blacklisted you can't receive personal e-mail from you,
then you haven't lost much, as the collective wisdom and resources of the
members of the omega-list (which you will always have access to) is much
greater than the wisdom and resources of any one individual. On the other
hand, the person who blacklisted you has lost you as a resource. Therefore,
they are simply hurting themselves.
The fact that a person blacklisted you indicates that they are indignant.
They fail to appreciate that not receiving an answer to their e-mail only
indicates that members of the omega-list either don't have the solution to
their problem, don't have the time, or don't have the interest in replying
to their particular e-mail. It doesn't necessarily indicate any negative
feelings someone may have towards them which would cause them to become
indignant.
The nature of any mailing list (such as the omega-list) is that its members
help the community at large. If the person who blacklisted you sent e-mail
to you only (and not the omega-list as well), then they are severely
limiting their chances of a helpful response to whatever they were having
problems with. Their risk of not receiving a reply is greatly increased,
because you as an individual may not have the solution to their problem, the
time, or the interest in helping them.
If, however, the person who blacklisted you sent e-mail to both you *and*
the omega-list (which one should do in general, so that we all benefit from
the problem and solution), then they not receiving a reply to their e-mail
simply indicates that no one on the list has the solution to their problem,
the time, or the interest to help them. IMHO this is fine.
I have observed that the members of the omega-list are, in general, a very
helpful and a very knowledgeable bunch. I have sent e-mails to the
omega-list with problems and questions that were replied to with very
helpful answers. I have also sent e-mails to the omega-list that have gone
unanswered. This, in my opinion, is fine. I know that people would answer
if they have the solution, time, and interest to do so.
The majority of the people on the omega-list won't put you in some killfile
because they became indignant that you didn't reply to an e-mail. The fact
that one person did shouldn't concern you.
Regards, Matt
