Here is a guess from an old futures trader. The relationships between the
contract months vary widely in markets where there are perishables involved.
Since you can't store them, the nearby and the distant contracts cannot be
arbitraged if the prices are out of line. The same logic applies to animals.
Perhaps the system these folks used was dependent on a predictable and
fairly constant relationship between contract months.
