I know this will get my skull shrunken and placed on a pole, but ...
>From what I remember, the average price of consumer goods (except fuel) from 1975 to 2000 increased at least 400%. Gas back then was about $0.70/gal. Therefore, gas today should cost around $2.80/gal. Put another way, back then it took 7 cans of tomato soup to buy one gallon of gas. Now it takes only 2 cans of soup.
As I see it, over the past 25 years, gas has become cheaper relative to almost everything else.

I'd be surprised if this makes a difference if everyone just fills up on
a different day, and in reality uses the same amt. of gas. If a lot of
people resolved to use the bus for 2 weeks *instead* of their cars, it
might be a different story. Unfortunately, we want the easy fix (take
it out of the Strategic Reserve), not the (most times) relative minor
inconvenience of public transportation.
Actually I kindof like taking the bus. It only takes a little longer
and I can read the whole way. The catch is, as a professional in a
factory, the exact end of the day is unpredictable and I found myself
having to choose between running out and catching the bus, and finishing
something that should be finished. If I have my car, I can take that
extra 5 minutes if needed, without waiting another 30 minutes for the
next bus.
Im hoping to redevelop the habit of riding my bike to work some days.
