Adding Futures to the Symbol Universe:
The Symbol Universe includes entries under the category future for the
underlying symbols for all futures trading at the time your Omega Research
application was released. The underlying symbol represents the commodity that
must be delivered when a futures contract expires, and the Symbol Universe
entry for the underlying symbol contains the correct futures contract
expiration months and other important settings.
Since new futures are offered infrequently by exchanges, you will rarely need
to add the underlying symbol for a future to the Symbol Universeyou will need
to do so only when futures are offered for a commodity for the first time.
Before you add the underlying symbol for a future to the Symbol Universe, use
the Symbol Universe Lookup option to ensure there is not already an entry in
the Symbol Universe for the underlying symbol under the category future.
Using the Symbol Universe Lookup option to search for a symbol entry in the
Symbol Universe is covered in the topic Adding Multiple Symbols to the
Portfolio .
Once the Symbol Universe contains the underlying symbol for a particular
commodity, you can use the Lookup option to build symbols representing
futures expiration months when adding futures to your portfolio. For example,
once the underlying symbol for pork bellies (PB) is listed in the Symbol
Universe, you can use the Lookup option to build the pork bellies contract
for February 1998 and add the correct symbol for the futures contract to your
portfolio.
Different data providers may use different underlying symbols to represent
the same commodity, and often use different symbols to represent the same
futures contracts; only your data provider can provide the correct
information in order to add the underlying symbol to the Symbol Universe.
Ensure that you obtain information for the underlying symbol and not for the
individual futures contract. The information you need to know about the
future in order to add the underlying symbol to the Symbol Universe is as
follows:
The underlying symbol for the future.
The exchange on which the futures contracts for the underlying symbol are
listed.
The months in which the futures contracts for the underlying symbol expire.
The margin. The amount of money you must pay in advance when purchasing the
future.
The price scale, daily limit, minimum movement, point value and the session
times for the underlying symbol (if different than the exchange defaults).
Once you have the information required to add the underlying symbol for a
future to the Symbol Universe, use the following steps:
1. Use the Tools - Symbol Universe Setup menu sequence to produce the Symbol
Universe Setup dialog.
2. Click the Add Symbol button to produce the Add Symbol in Category dialog.
3. Use the Category to Add drop-down list to select Future.
4. Click OK to produce the Symbol Universe: Future Settings dialog.
5. In the Symbol edit box, type the underlying symbol for the commodity on
which the futures contracts are being offered.
6. In the Description edit box, type the name of the commodity.
7. When you are adding a domestic future, click the Option Info button.
Clicking this button produces a dialog that enables you to link the future
with the options associated to the future.
8. In the Exchange drop-down list, choose the exchange on which the
underlying symbol is listed.
If you need to change the volume multiplier, use the Volume Multiplier
drop-down list to select the desired volume multiplier. The volume multiplier
is used to adjust price data when the data provider places the decimal point
in a non-standard place. The volume multiplier is used to adjust data volume
while the data is being collected from the data provider. You should use this
option only when the data provider drops digits in a number.
For example, if 1,000,000 shares of Microsoft trade on a particular day, but
the data provider sends the volume as 1,000, you must use a volume multiplier
of 1,000 to adjust the volume data.
If you need to change the price multiplier, use the Price Multiplier
drop-down list to set the price multiplier. The price multiplier is used to
adjust price data when the data provider places the decimal point in a
non-standard place.
For example, pork bellies are normally quoted in cents per pound. A price
quote of 40.50 means 40-1/2-cents. If the data provider sends pork bellies
pricing data quoted in dollars per pound rather than cents per pound, you
must use a price multiplier of 100 to convert the information to the correct
format.
In the Symbol Number edit box, you can enter a unique number to identify the
symbol. Omega Research suggests you use a five-digit number (for example,
99999).
9. In the Expiration Months section of the dialog, choose the months in which
the futures contracts expire. To select a month, click the corresponding
check box to produce a check mark in the box. To deselect a month, click the
check box to remove the check mark from the box.
10. Select the number of Near Series cycle months in which you want data in
addition to the cycle pattern. This number will indicate the span of months
from the current date in which you will receive data on the future if it is
active.
11. In the Margin edit box, enter the initial amount of money the investor
must deposit when buying or selling the futures contract.
If you want to collect daily data for the symbol, you must also specify when
the Omega Server is to begin collecting the daily data and for how long.
These are the Collect Daily Quote and Collect Daily Quote for options,
respectively. The Collect Daily Quote option is specified as x number of
minutes after Session 1 ends, which means you must be sure to define a start
and end time for Session 1. Enter the times in HH:MMam/pm or Military format.
For example 5:00am or 0500.
12. If the underlying symbol uses the exchange defaults for price scale,
daily limit, minimum movement and point value, ensure the Use exchange
settings as default option is selected; it is selected by default.
If the underlying symbol does not use the exchange defaults, click the Use
the following settings as default check box and enter the symbol-specific
values for Price Scale, Daily Limit, Minimum Movement, Point Value, and
Session Times. Enter the session times in HH:MMam/pm format.
Please refer to the topic Editing the settings of a symbol in the Symbol
Universe for definitions of price scale, daily limit, minimum movement,
point value, and session times.
13. Click OK. The symbol is added to the Symbol Universe and you are returned
to the Symbol Universe Setup dialog.
Once you have added the underlying symbol for the future to the Symbol
Universe, you can add symbols for multiple contract months to your portfolio.
