Last week I posted a message pointing out the following behavior:
When charting the emini I note that my cursor pulses rythmically every 1-3
seconds, turning into an hour glass for about 1/4 to 1/2 a second per pulse.
While the system has pulsed into this wait mode I can not select tools, and
if I'm already drawing with tools, or measuring data etc, its as if the
focus is robbed from the tool and I may have to restart the operation.
*** If you are a user experiencing the same issue, or have solved this
issue, I would appreciate an email to mwatkins@xxxxxxxxxxxx ***
I want to try to pursue this issue to conclusion with Omega. I personally
know of several others that experience the same or very similar issues. If
we can compare installations we may locate the problem, and hey, that might
solve others...
Conditions under which this issue will appear
---------------------------------------------
- always. Meaning it happens during peak volume hours during the day and
also in the dead of night when only a tick or so a minute is coming in on
Globex. During the night session the "pulsing" much less frequent, timed
exactly with every tick that comes in. There is no relation to the volume of
data coming in at any given point, only that increased volume increases the
frequency of the occurence. It is not at any rate a datafeed speed/volume
issue, proved by the existance of the behaviour at 3am ET last night.
- 1 plain chart in a new workspace with no analysis techniques applied. not
even volume bars! Therefore we are not asking TS to do much more than paint
the screen
- versions of TradeStation which I have observed this - SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4
and SP4b
- my operating environment for the latest test, I completely uninstalled
TS/global server etc **and all my historical data - exported it and there it
sits untouched now**, and resinstalled over this weekend SP3 and then
immediately SP4b. I have only 16 symbols in there now - the four futures
mentioned plus AOL and MSFT for comparision.
- machine - Pentium III P350 with 256MB RAM running NT 4.0 SP6. Internet
connection is 256KBPS average cable, although lucky me I usually get 512KBPS
plus. I note that the last couple of Service Packs have increased the CPU
utilization overall...
Conditions under which this issue will not appear
-------------------------------------------------
- stocks. I have never seen this occur with stocks, not even big movers.
Prior to this weekend I captured 500 symbols including all the regular
volume leaders on NYSE and Nasdaq. Charting even AOL in the height of mania
today works just fine.
Wild Guesses Anyone?
--------------------
Based on the above I suspect there is some funky math error or some issue
with chart scaling perhaps that is causing the issue. It seems simplistic I
don't chart many stocks above 150$, perhaps 1400 points plus is introducing
a bug related to math or precision.
Do you have an answer?
---------------------
- If you have had this issue and know of a resolution (no funny answers
about buying another product please... I am quite capable of dreaming those
ones up myself!) I'd appreciate it.
Positive Note
-------------
So far a clean install of SP3 plus SP4b seems to be quite a stable
combination, the above problem notwithstanding. Prior to reinstalling new I
was unable to plot multiple data streams on a chart (like SP H0 , TICK,
TRIN) without routinely crashing the system. Generally speaking it seems
faster. At least if only charting stocks...
Regarding the screen refresh/system resource issue, if you have the same
experience and/or have a resolution for it, please contact me *and* the
list - I'm sure there are others out there with similar/same problems.
Thanks and best regards,
Michael
