I wonder why one would think computer trading systems would be any
better than any other computer program?

I wouldn't.
When one of my trading systems gives me a signal, I look at the
indicators and see if everything is looking normal. If so, I usually
take the trade. if something looks screwy, I may pass this one.
Usually, it would have been OK but why take the chance. I then learn
that the system did OK in that situation so next time that happens, I
might take the trade. If I find frequent cases where it seems to
screw up, I try to add code to find those cases. It is just like any
other computer program. It handles only those situations you program
it to handle.
