Thanks to all who responded to my post
The SSI ACT test that was suggested took care of the problem.
For anyone who is interested, the setting in the case of my processor
-- AMD K6-3 400MHZ -- turned out to be
SET SSI_ACT=25,2,35
My sincere appreciation to all who took the trouble to respond.
