I've used both Netscape (4.x) and Internet Explorer (3 & 4) with no
problems. I've also used WS-FTP and other ftp tools. I just tried
Internet Explorer 4 now and it worked.
I'd suggest you get in contact with your ISP. My brother has recently had
problems downloading files during peak hours. It turned out that a link in
the chain between his ISP and the internet backbone was forming a poor
bottleneck and caused bad performance during "prime time". He had a
number of problems with loosing connections with various Internet
applications.
You might also prove/disprove this by trying to download again during
non-peak hours (e.g. early morning or mid-day). His problems were mostly
in the evening.
