The last time I checked with my broker I could trade the S&P with a reduced
margin amount(like $6,000 instead of $12,000), but never zero.

Hans I trade at Smith Barney that way! There is no required margin for day
trading! It has been this way for about 2 years now. Crazy I know..but
true.
