Hi Richard,
The backtesting question was me being a bit cynical about more programming tools making anyone any money.
I agree that the MS formula language is very restrictive and a lot of time gets wasted trying to go around its logic limitations. Vit C will make programming much easier for those who understand standard code writing.
The thing is software packages like Trade Station have always had better programming tools with subsets of Pascal, etc. but the people who use Trade Station don't make any more money than the ones who use MS or Ami or any other platform. The implication is more flexible coding doesn't mean more profitable trading.
The benefit I see from Vit C is that some people develop anxiety over not being able to implement complex strategies in MS due to the limitations of the MS function language. Now they will be able to use Vit C., program whatever they like, and then backtest it. All that won't make them better traders, but it will relieve their frustration thinking about what they would have been able to do if MS was more flexible.
Active Trader Magazine has had a long running series on both backtesting various trading strategies and developing a trading system. If anyone is interested in seeing how a trading system is developed and how hard it is to find one that is profitable, and next to impossible to find one that is consistent, they should read that series. It's a good education.
(Richard, thanks for your software and data contributions to the MS community. They are appreciated.)
