Most of us are looking for a real free way to get "end of day" data for
different technical analysis software like Metastock. We are know, that
Yahoo and Google provides data, but how do we get it on a daily basis,
for free. There are lot many methods to get it, but is there a automated
way of getting it.. Yes! You really can.
Given below is a brief method to get data and convert it into Metastock
format.
The tool that we are going to use is called the "yahoo and google quotes
downloader" [I am not affliated with this website nor the tool in any
way, except that I am an end user]
Features of the tool:
* multiple simultaneous connections for fast download * get data
for any number of symbols and any period of time (if available on the
Yahoo or Google servers) * get complete data or update the most
recent bars, * optional split and dividend data adjustment, *
daily, weekly, monthly bar durations, * data validation, *
configurable output data format (eg. txt, csv) * data file name
customization (prepend or append string, extension) * command line
options for automated downloading of up to date Nasdaq, NYSE and AMEX
stock symbols and for handling of multiple symbols lists * session
events logging. * rich set of APIs for setting various options and
controlling its behavior from other programs

Install it (it supports most windows format, I am using it on Windows
Vista Home Premium (32bit))
Settings to work for metastock:
1. Choose Settings 2. Click "Formatting" on the options on the
left side
1. Enable "Add symbol to column", leave column value to "0"
2. Click "Output" on the options on the left side
1. Change value of extension field to "txt" 2. Click "OK"
3. Create a txt file with list of all symbols that you want to
download data for (you can type one symbol per line or leave a space
between each symbol on the same line) 4. Save the file and store it
in the folder of your choice. 5. Choose the symbol file using the
"Symbols" option & set your output directory to the folder of your
choice. 6. Start downloading.
Now, use the downloader tool, that came with your metastock software.
(open it)
Click on tools -> convert
Following are the settings:
Source Settings
Filetype: ASCII Text
Folder: Choose the folder which is the output directory you already set
on YGQD
Filename: Click Browse, choose (Control+A): Select all, Click Open
Destination Settings
Filetype: Metastock Format
Folder: Choose your metastock folder (you can use a temporary folder
until you see the results you want)
Open Metastock, choose the required symbol from the converted metastock
data folder.
You should be done by now. Enjoy Free data.
