I was able to replicate your problem using the date as a number 
field. It needs to be text.

See if the date column on the spread sheet you're converting is 
aligned to the left or the right.(Make the column very wide. It's 
easier to see.) 

If left it's text as is required and your problem lies elsewhwere. 
If aligned right it's a number. Convert the number using Text
(Mycell,"mm/dd/yy"). The quotation marks are required.
