Marc, the two softwares I use are Metastock and TC2007. They
compliment each other well. MS is great for backtesting, building
trading systems, using existing canned ones and generally helps distill
things down to an up or down arrow if time is of essence each evening
and you want a decision tool. I like how MS allows you to customize
your templates to what suits you. MS is easily usable with FX data
also.
TC2007 offers great input daily from the Worden Bros as well as some
higlighted stocks and where they could be headed, as well a selected
daily letter from a reader showing you how that person uses the system.
TC is excellent for easyscans combining fundamental and technical
filters, leaving you a handful of stocks out of the 7000+ that meets
your criterias. MS's explore function is somewhat different - although
good. TC is not convenient if you want to also do mutual fund charts -
they used to have a separate software for mutual funds - a pain..
I stumbled onto MS first and then picked up TC. I did not go about
getting each software and comparing them - thats kind of unrealistic
and impractical. Omnitrader seemed interesting also - but I do not want
to open up any more softwares..
A few capablilities lacking in the two are:
1. Multi-time frame backtesting analysis and trading systems
2. Portfolio of stocks backtesting
3. Analysis of synthetics using stocks and options.
4. More detailed options analysis
5. Past data simulation trading games, one data point at a time where
your performance is automatically captured and summarized
